Fishing in Miami
Miami’s sportfishing potential is often overshadowed by a myriad of other famous attractions and activities. It shouldn’t be. This is one of those sublime fisheries you probably didn’t know you’ve been missing in your angling portfolio.
The moment everyone’s favorite migratory pelagics make these waters their own early in the spring, Miami fishing charters can easily rival any of the hottest Caribbean big game counterparts. Come fall, and all an angler needs to do is slightly adjust their tackle, as the city transitions into one of the best reef and bottom fishing destinations in all of Florida. Oh, and there’s also some spectacular fly fishing to be done during the spring and summer months. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Known For
Fishing in the Magic City is all about opportunity. With some of the best flats fishing in the country just a couple of miles from downtown and the Gulf Stream being accessible a short boat ride from the Government Cut, there are a host of opportunities on the doorstep.
The eastern side of Biscayne Bay is undoubtedly one of the most famous fishing spots in Miami. Here, what looks like never-ending flats spans the horizon just three to five miles from the shopping malls, condos and restaurants of Miami. Home to Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon most of the year-round, this is a haven for light tackle and fly anglers. Sample the rod-bending Tarpon fishing Florida is famous for, or try sight fishing for the elusive Bonefish.
But Biscayne Bay fishing is far being from the whole story. Just a couple of miles beyond the Government Cut inlet you are in the midst of the nutrient-rich waters coming from the Gulf Stream. Over the winter months, the reefs and ledges that are in sight of land play host to huge numbers of Sailfish. Billfishing has never been so accessible! What with Blackfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, Wahoo, and a whole variety of other big game favorites also being caught on Miami fishing trips, there is very little more you could wish for. Just step aboard a charter boat. Miami will do the rest.
If your fishing trip wasn’t enough, you can have a good time fishing from the local piers, with South Pointe Park Pier being not only picturesque, but also a great place to catch Spanish Mackerel and Snapper. Oleta River State Park has great opportunities for Redfish and Snook from its designate fishing pier, and Newport Fishing Pier has access to a wide range of species.
Rules & Regulations
You do not need a license if you are fishing from a for-hire vessel (guided charter, party boat) that has a valid charter boat license or charter captain license.
Types of Fishing
The best Miami deep sea fishing charters will give you the chance to try a variety of techniques, all of which will be adapted to the season that you are fishing. In the winter, one of the most popular techniques kite fishing with live bait. The Sailfish just won’t be able to resist! Otherwise, you might be fast trolling offshore for Wahoo, trolling slower nearshore for Kingfish, bottom fishing or drifting over the area’s numerous reefs and wrecks for Snappers and Groupers, or even going after Swordfish.
Inshore, Miami’s highlight has got to be sight fishing the breathtaking flats for Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit. Whether you are fishing with light tackle or on the fly, this is going to be an experience you will never forget.
Want to try something different? Miami’s proximity to local reefs and the Gulf Stream makes spearfishing fun for passionate spearos as well as adventurous anglers wanting to perfect a new skill.
